My sophomore year of high school, I fell in love with a girl. She wasn’t anything special – she had lanky arms and pale skin. She liked Pokémon and had a crush on Legolas from the Lord of the Rings movies.
I wasn’t anything special either, and that’s why we were meant for each other.
It took a few months, but I eventually mustered up the courage to ask her to prom. I decided to make a romantic diorama – at the time, I thought it was the most unique idea in the world. I was positive that even the most handsome and romantic man on the planet wouldn’t stand a chance against my preteen handiwork.
I’ll be honest – it was an arts-and-crafts masterpiece, complete with pipe cleaner crowns and tissue paper dresses.
When I gave it to her, I waited patiently. I spent a week hoping for her response in the form of a clever homemade do-dad.
But it never came, and she never said another word to me.
At that point, I realized what I had known all along – she wasn’t anything special.
